Before the show starts

The inevitability of a wedding is that, in order to not be late for the start, you will end up hanging out at the church/ceremony venue with not a lot to do other than wait (im)patiently. Once you've said hi to the people you know and you've taken your seat, there just isn't a whole lot of anything to do. I always end up reading through the order of service at least three times before things kick off, just to have something to occupy myself with.

So! Here are a few ideas that can help keep your guests entertained!

A guide to the wedding party, in text or pictures. I think the who's who above is adorable, and how amazing is this family/friends tree below?

Ask for drawings from your guests - provide a pen and paper and ask for doodles and pictures, e.g. draw the bride and groom, represent their relationship using pictures etc. I personally have some remarkably lacking-in-artistic-skills friends who are always happy to draw a terrible picture and make me laugh.

Something to watch provides a conversation starter for people sat next to guests they don't know. How about a projected slideshow, with photos of the bride and groom with all their guests?

A written welcome in the front of the order of service makes guests feel special and gives them something extra to read, bar reading and re-reading the words of the hymns (yes I have ended up doing this).

I think I will aim to do at least one of these, although it totally depends on how long you have to prepare (alas you cannot throw together a slideshow last minute, much as I wish you could!). I am late to everything, so my guests will certainly need it. Poor guests.
